What Is Post-coma Rehabilitation

Post-coma rehabilitation, also known as post-acute rehabilitation, is a comprehensive approach to help individuals recover from a coma or a severe brain injury. It includes a variety of therapies and interventions aimed at restoring cognitive, physical, and psychological functioning.

Rehabilitation can start as soon as the patient’s condition has stabilized and can take place even in the ICU (this stage of rehab is commonly referred to as “acute rehab”). When the patient is ready to be discharged from the hospital, post-acute rehab in a specialised stimulating environment should take over for the rest of recovery journey.

Early rehabilitation intervention plays a key role in prevention of complications due to immobilisation (e.g. muscle wastage, spasticity), improvement of alertness and orientation.

Goals that you will achieve:

Optimising arousal through sensory stimulation:

One of the key strategies in this process is Sensory stimulation. This can be a powerful tool for improving consciousness levels and activating relevant brain regions through Multisensory stimulation techniques, Music Therapy, etc

Managing dysphagia and swallowing:

An intervention to help the patient regain their ability to swallow properly

Tracheostomy management:

Managing a tracheostomy during post-coma rehabilitation requires a multidisciplinary approach that includes careful selection of the tracheostomy tube, proper perioperative management, adequate post-operative care, and patient education. The goal is to ensure the patient’s safety and comfort while going through their recovery

Applications of non-invasive brain stimulation:

Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) is a set of techniques used to stimulate the brain without surgical intervention
