Adding Life To Your Years

Malaysians Are Living Longer, But Are We Living Healthier?

We are living longer today than we ever have. Global life expectancy has increased by more than 50% in the last few decades, averaging at 71 years in 2015. Malaysians today can expect to live up to 20 more years than during the country’s independence – the latest average life expectancy is 73.2 years and 77.6 years for male and female respectively.

Does that mean we are ageing well? Or has ageing taken a toll on our quality of life? According to the World Health Organisation, we still have a long way to go. Older individuals these days are not necessarily living healthier, more active lives. In fact, we are living more years with disability and a lower quality of life.

How We Live Today Will Impact How Well We Age

Ageing is inevitable, but it is very possible to age healthily.

There are various stages of ageing:

  • Pre-ageing (<55 years)
  • Active ageing (55-70 years)
  • Passive ageing (65-80 years).

From a young age, we must be proactive in looking seriously at our lifestyles. What we do today – our lifestyle, dietary practices, fitness level – has a big impact on how we live in the later stages of life. One could age prematurely because of lack of physical activity, poor dietary habits and continuous high-stress environments.
