A spinal cord injury (“SCI”) is a life-changing incident, and, unless treated with specialised care, could hold you back for life. The journey towards regaining function may be long, but can be expedited with a structured, individualised rehabilitation approach.
WHAT IS SPINAL CORD INJURY REHABILITATION?
Spinal cord injury rehabilitation is a specialised program designed to help individuals who have experienced spinal cord injuries to regain function, independence, and quality of life. It involves a multidisciplinary approach that may include:
• Physical therapy • Occupational therapy • Speech therapy, and • Other interventions tailored to the specific needs of each patient (Ie: Nutrition/Psychology)
The goal is to maximize recovery, improve mobility, manage complications, and provide support for the physical, emotional, and social challenges that arise after a spinal cord injury.
Goals that you will achieve
Restoration of Function: Restore the patient’s ability to perform daily activities and regain function in their body as quickly and effectively as possible
Improvement of Motor Skills: Rehabilitation includes exercises that promote muscle strength, endurance, and control, which are essential for the patient to regain independence
Motor Skill Development: This involves teaching patients how to perform activities of daily living, such as transferring, dressing, and eating, which can help them regain independence in their daily liveability and independence
