CHOOSING A REHABILITATION PROGRAMME

Selecting a rehabilitation programme after you experience an injury or illness can be hard to do. You want a rehabilitation programme that will help you become as independent as you can be in your daily living. You also want a programme that will give you the best possible care and takes into account your own circumstances, such as, where you live, your transport arrangements, and family support. We are here to help you get a better understanding of this process of finding a good quality rehabilitation programme.

WHAT IS REHABILITATION & HOW CAN IT HELP ME?

Rehabilitation aims to help you to live as independently as possible, especially if any new arrangements are required after your injury or illness. It involves a carefully designed programme and coordination of care to help you regain your functional abilities at your own pace. To have a successful rehabilitation experience, you may need to relearn some old skills and learn some new skills.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE INDEPENDENT?

The goal of independence in rehabilitation is for you to do activities of daily living (ADL), such as, eating, dressing, bathing, being mobile, and so on. Rehabilitation works to reduce the limitations you may experience with certain activities, for example, physiotherapy helps improve your balance and muscle strength so that you can walk better on your own.

WHAT ARE REHABILITATION GOALS AND OUTCOMES?

In rehabilitation, outcomes refer to certain scores which indicate the level of progress and independence. For example, are you able to walk independently, what level of assistance is required, if any, has any pain or swelling reduced. By objectively measuring these outcomes before, during and after a course of treatment, you are assured of your improvement.

HOW DO REHABILITATION PROGARMMES DIFFER?

Programme design depends on your medical condition, level of care dependency, intensity of therapy, length of stay, and the physical environment. Inpatient rehabilitation is provided in a specialist hospital with 24-hour medical care and a full range of rehabilitation services provided by a multi-disciplinary team. Outpatient rehabilitation is suitable if you are able to travel to and from your home to the facility for therapy.

WHO WILL I WORK WITH DURING REHABILITATION?

Your rehabilitation team will comprise several different professionals depending on your needs and the programme designed for you. This team is led by a specialist and convenes weekly to review your progress. Learn more about the rehabilitation team here.

WHEN SHOULD I START REHABILITATION?

Your first point of treatment often begins with acute medical care provided in an acute/general hospital with the aim of stabilising your medical condition. Rehabilitation begins after you are stable. It helps to reduce the effects of problems following the injury or illness. This process takes time, patience, motivation and hard work.
